Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pow Wow?

A Pow Wow is a gathering of people in celebration, believed by some to have originated from War Dance Societies of the Plains Tribes. Traditionally, a Pow Wow would have been a gathering of Native American tribes or people, joining together to share their songs to reflect on time-honored traditions and celebrate their rich heritage. These have evolved over time into the modern Pow Wows we share today. Our Pow Wows are organised to be both fun and educational, and run in appreciation of Native American culture and tradition.

How is a Pow Wow run and what will happen on the day?

Pow Wows will begin with what's known as 'grand entry', which is where all the dancers will first enter the area to signify the start of the event. As the Pow Wow progresses, you will see different types of dances - some will be slower and more traditional while others will be faster and more modern. There are some dances which may be performed by male or female dancers only, and a few that will involve just one dancer taking the area to showcase a particular style to the audience.

During Pow Wow the dancers will move in mainly a clockwise direction around the dance area, referred to as 'the Circle'. Circles have always been an important symbol to Native Americans and signify many things, such as the continuous pattern of life and death, the path of the sun and moon, and the cycle of the seasons. The Circle should never be broken, and no one should walk through the arena or the drum groups setting. During Pow Wow, your respect and consideration will be appreciated.

A Pow Wow also wouldn't be complete without drummers and singers, and we are proud to have a drumming group who perform genuine Native songs meticulously learnt by ear alone - none of the songs you will hear during Pow Wow have been written down to be rehearsed! The music you will hear during Pow Wow is unlike anything you will have experienced before, and when coupled with the dancers in the Circle, is a sacred and incredibly moving experience which will stir your soul.

If you are brave enough, there will be some dances during the event in which spectators may join with the dancers in the Circle - these will be announced by the MC and anyone of any age is welcome to participate during these special dances.

What's regalia and why is it worn?

When we refer to 'regalia' we mean the special clothing worn by the dancers who perform within the Circle. There are many different types of regalia, with the style chosen by a dancer often signifying their dancing style or as a reflection of a tribe that person has a particular connection to. Dancers in traditional regalia will often move with slower steps, while more modern dancers will dress in bright colours and dance faster. During Pow Wow, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the backgrounds and styles of each dancer as well as the tribes they represent.

Can I take photographs during a Pow Wow?

Yes of course! We only ask that you are respectful and obtain consent from anyone who is not dancing in the Circle before you photograph them.

Is camping available at all events?

While camping is available at many events, some Pow Wows are are day visit only. This will be clearly listed on any event is it is applicable to.

What happens if the weather is bad? Will the Pow Wow be cancelled?

We do our best to ensure our Pow Wows can take place rain or shine, and we endeavor wherever possible to have an alternate indoor venue booked should the weather take a turn for the worse! On occasions where bad weather is expected in the afternoon, the Pow Wow may start outdoors earlier than planned to ensure dancers, organisers and traders have enough time at the end of the day to pack away safely.

What's a Tipi?

A tipi is a portable tent, usually made from canvas and supported by a frame of wooden poles. These tents were traditionally used as permanent or seasonal dwellings, often accommodating on average eight to ten people. Tipis are designed to protect against the elements by being waterproof, cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Traditional tipis are conical and feature smoke flaps at the top of the structure in order to accommodate a fire within. The word 'tipi' originates from the Sioux tribe, and translates to "used to live in".

Do I have to bring a Tipi to camp during the event?

No, not at all! Any tent, caravan, campervan and many other camping accommodations are more than welcome at our events! If you wish to book a pitch, please complete the form located under the 'Book Camping' page of this website. If you have any special requirements, you can notify us of these by completing the relevant section of the camping booking form, alternatively you can discuss them separately by completing an enquiry form (located under the 'Contact' section of this website) or emailing us at UKPowWowTrail@gmail.com.

I own a Tipi and I would like to attend one of your events as a camper, but I don't have anyone to help me pitch my Tipi - can you help?

We may be able to provide free assistance in pitching your tipi; if you would like to request this please select the relevant box on the camping booking form. While we will endeavor to provide assistance, we can't guarantee this service and it is agreed subject to team member availability. Any requests for pitching assistance need to be submitted in advance of the event; we will confirm as soon as possible if your request can be accommodated.

Children under 16 are free of charge, but is there a limit on how many children can attend for free with each paying adult?

There's no limit on how many children can accompany an adult on the day, we do ask however that children are appropriately supervised at all times.

Is there anything else I should be aware of before I attend?

It's important to be aware that we have a strict no alcohol or drugs policy during all of our events. A Pow Wow is a celebration of life and a unique ceremonial event which should be respected. As our events are inclusive of young children and families, we ask for your cooperation in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. Any individual caught drinking or taking drugs will be escorted from site.
